Nutrition
The extreme poverty in many developing countries is associated with malnutrition or inadequate nourishment affecting a large part of the population. Children are especially vulnerable to a lack of adequate nutrition, which is crucial for their physical and mental development.
Become works with local community leaders including caretakers, educators, and health practitioners, to discuss the importance of a sufficient and balanced diet, and to create plans to provide proper nutrition for the children they serve. When enough food is available, the diet of populations in developing countries is sometimes unbalanced or unvaried, due to a lack of access to appropriate nutrients and foods for young children. For more information about nutrition in developing countries see the External resources page. |
As part of Become’s intervention in the field of nutrition, we monitor the nutritional intake of the children under our care. In the summer of 2011, volunteers designed nutritional guidelines, which were integrated into the daily diets of the children at the Heartspring Children’s Village. We intend to implement these guidelines in our future projects in order to guarantee that children under our care receive sufficient and adequate nutrition, ensuring their healthy development.
